Controversy over French President’s Holocaust Education Proposal
You may have heard that French President Nicolas Sarkozy has proposed a new plan for Holocaust education in France. According to his plan, each student will “adopt” a child who was killed in the Holocaust in order to personalize the study of Holocaust history. This plan has caused much debate in France. The objections to the plan range from the concern that this will prove too emotionally difficult for young students to the unfairness of including only Jewish victims and excluding gypsies and other victims.
