Bevin and Partition

Ernest Bevin, Foreign Minister of the British Government from 1945-1951, said this in a parliamentary debate in 1947:

A good many people have said that the way out of the difficulty is to have partition…but really we cannot make two viable States of Palestine, however we may try.   We can make one viable State, and, so far as I can see, or as far as any student of the map can see, the only thing we could do would be to transfer the rest to one of the Arab States…
