Classical Studies are Dying in Israeli Universities

Israeli students are not interested in studying Classics, so the university departments are very small.  The Bar-Ilan Classics department is down to only 2.75 faculty members.  Clearly this is a function of the focus on career in Israeli academia and the lack of study for the sake of knowledge.  Students at Israeli universities are older than their American counterparts and need to start earning a living as soon as possible.  This means that they lose out on the study of history and other humanities.  Ignorance of Greek and Roman history is also ignorance of the roots of Western civilization, and many aspects of Jewish history.

Haaretz reports on the crisis in Classics.
