Who Appointed the Mufti of Jerusalem?
The Jewish British High Commissioner, Sir Herbert Samuel, appointed Haj Amin al-Husseini Mufti of Jerusalem in 1921. Samuel was convinced that an official leader of the Palestinian Arabs could keep the peace between Jews and Arabs. From 1921 until 1929, Haj Amin al-Husseini took a moderate stance, thus reinforcing his position as the religious and political leader of the Palestinian Arabs. From the riots of 1929 onwards, the Mufti escalated his anti-Jewish activities, culminating in his support of Hitler and his Final Solution.
