Memorial Day

Today is Memorial Day – Yom HaZikaron – in Israel.  Before we are able to fully celebrate the independence of the State of Israel, we must first acknowledge the great sacrifices of those killed in battle or by terrorism, and the even greater sacrifices of their families.  The leaders of Israel 60 years ago understood that a state is not given as a gift on a silver platter.  The struggle for a state did not end when Israel won the War of Independence; the wounds of the Second Lebanon War and various terror attacks are still fresh.

Memorial Day is commemorated in Israel with the sounding of a siren at 8 PM on the eve of Memorial Day and at 11 AM the next day.  All traffic, work and other activity is halted while citizens remember the fallen soldiers and victims of terror.  This video shows the effect of the siren on the Ayalon Highway, Israel’s busiest road:
