Tisha B’Av

Today is Tisha B’Av, the day which commemorates the destructions of the First and Second Temples.  Or, as some say, commemorates the reasons for the destruction.  Aside from the political reasons described in the Bible and in Josephus, it seems that societal ills and disunity played a large part too.

The loss of the Temples and the exiles that came with them brought an end to Jewish nationalism for many years.  Jewish nationalism has been reawakened in the last 120 years or so, and Tisha B’Av is also a time to reflect on Jewish identity in the 21st century, in Israel and in the Diaspora.
